FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What will it feel like?
In all honesty I do not know what it will feel like for you. We are all unique beings, no two of us are exactly alike and we all feel and experience things in our own special way.
I could tell you of my trance experiences and of many of my clients but your experience may not be anything like that.
The aim is to become completely relaxed both physically and mentally, totally at ease, feeling comfortable and secure.
Some people become completely distracted as their conscious mind wanders off and others say it is just like sitting listening to me in a very relaxed state. Most of the therapies that we are involved with only require a very shallow level of trance and almost everyone can achieve this if they want to.
Hypnosis with young children usually involves working with them in an awake state, with eyes wide open whilst playing or listening to a story. They feel comfortable that way.

Will I be asleep?
No you will not be asleep.
I will sometimes use the words “deep sleep” but it is not the sleep of bedtime that we are trying to achieve. Rather, it is a deep state of relaxation where your body can become as relaxed as bedtime sleep but your mind will still be alert. You do not have to consciously listen to what I say but you have to hear what I say. Your unconscious mind will hear and understand.

Will I lose control?
You will remain in control throughout. You cannot be hypnotised against your will, you cannot be made to do anything against your will under hypnosis. When you watch a stage show just remember that those people are doing things that they want to do, because if they didn’t want to, they wouldn’t do them.
Hypnotherapy is not about the therapist controlling you but about empowering you. Giving you back control of your life so that you have the power to do the things that you want to do.

What are the side effects?
As hypnotic trance is a naturally occurring state, a state of deep relaxation, the side effects are all good. The trance state alone without any therapy has been proven to lower the blood pressure and extensive testing is being done in hypertension units.
After therapy, clients generally report feeling better about themselves, with a more positive and optimistic attitude.

Can everyone be hypnotised?
If they really want to, practically everyone can experience at least a light state of trance and that is usually all that is required for most therapies.
It is important to stress again that they must really want to do it.
Sometimes smokers are bullied by their well meaning family or friends to seek therapy but they themselves are not ready to give up smoking. If this is the case they will resist hypnosis and the session will fail. This is probably the most common occurrence of people seeking hypnosis but not wanting to do it. However, a good therapist can usually screen them out and will tell them to come back when they are ready to do it.

Will I tell all my secrets?
Once again, no!
You will be in control and cannot be made to do or say anything that you do not feel happy with.
Truth drugs and lie detectors are used for that purpose, not hypnosis.
