HYPNOSIS Hypnosis and Hypnotism are words that still frighten a lot of ill-informed people. They create visions of people being humiliated and laughed at for the entertainment of others, visions of one person being manipulated and controlled by another. This is all a bit of a shame really because not only is this a false image but they could also be missing out on a process that could help them, or even change their lives. The truth is, no one can be made to do anything under hypnosis if it is against his or her nature and beliefs. The other thing that scares people about Hypnosis is, the thought that they are going to be taken back to a previous existence (past life regression). Whilst this is a useful tool, it is only used in very rare circumstances, only with the client’s consent and a good therapist would never do this just for the sake of the curiosity of ‘dabblers’. So what is Hypnosis? It was given the name around 1840 by James Braid, a London surgeon and comes from the Greek word hypnos meaning sleep. Used for centuries as a healing process it is one of the oldest known to man. Ancient Sanskrit writings tell of its use in the healing temples of India and Egyptian scrolls mention the use of trance induction for healing in the sleeping temples. Hypnosis, is a state of great relaxation, it is an altered mental state or state of trance which can be induced in various ways. So what is Trance? Trance is a state which occurs quite naturally to us all, almost every day. Most of us can think of an instance whilst driving, when we can’t remember travelling part of the journey, that’s trance! Or, listening to a drama or a comedy on the radio and being able to form an image of the scene just from the sounds we’re listening too. That too, is trance! The truth is, when we concentrate on something and focus our attention on it, we go into a state of trance. This could be whilst we’re working, relaxing, watching television, or even walking or jogging. In this natural state we become receptive to suggestions and ideas of a positive nature but not ones which run contrary to our basic beliefs. These suggestions and ideas are communicated to our unconscious mind, the part of our mind that influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices that we make. In this trance state we also experience a deep level of relaxation, our breathing usually slows down and tests have shown that our blood pressure decreases. It is now widely believed that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and the therapist acts only as a guide. In other words, the trance depends on the client’s compliance and willingness to do it. This also reinforces the fact that the client is always in control. A fact which is contrary to the belief that the hypnotist or therapist gains control over the client. If that were the case, how would this be of any use once the client had departed? To sum up, hypnotic trance is:
